How to Grow Your Hair Really, Really Long

Lydia Schoonderbeek

Do you want to grow out a haircut you hate or try to achieve a bum-grazing length? Most hair grows around half an inch each month, which can also be an eternity once you’ve decided to grow out a bob. Here, Source Beauty provides you with a quick and easy guide for getting your hair to grow longer fast. Scissors Need to Be Your Best Friend On average most women need to cut off about two centimeters every 8 weeks. This ensures that your hair stays healthy as it’s growing. Going too long between trims can thin out your hair and cause split-ends. If you wait for a long time your split ends will cause your hair to break off high up on the strand, which will actually make it shorter. Most hair types need to get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks to avoid extreme split-ends! Curly hair can go up to 12 week in-between trims. Give Your Hair A Rest This really depends on how much damage you caused to your hair. The more you wash, style and dye takes a toll on your hair, so this needs to be kept at a minimum. Tip if you are washing with great products, using heat protectants and non-damaging tools with a single heat setting then it shouldn’t be a problem. Strengthen Your Scalp It’s not a secret that strong hair means stronger scalp. Studies indicate that a daily scalp massage is proven to increase hair thickness. Try spending 5 minutes a day massaging your scalp (or, “get your loved one to do it!”). Do a cold-water rinse at the end of each shower This really does help to grow hair and keep long hair healthy for longer. Cold water lays down the outer layer of hair more smoothly, which helps prevent moisture loss and heat damage. Only do it for a few seconds, but this one extra step over time can make a huge difference. Apply an oil or mask treatment weekly. Hair that touches your shoulders or beyond can be a few years old and are likely to need more attention than using normal conditioner. Try using a hydrating hair mask and oils weekly. Hair oils leave a residue on hair, so its best to apply it to damp hair, leave it on for 10 minutes, then shampoo and condition like normal. Oils provide your hair with fatty acids and then, when rinsed out, using regular shampoo helps seal them inside hair.
